Suspected bandits have abducted several Islamic clerics following a prayer gathering at the residence of Senator Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State, sparking alarm over worsening insecurity in the region. The incident occurred on Saturday evening after over 2,000 Islamic scholars and imams gathered for special prayers ahead of the 2027 general elections. Crisis reporter Bakatsine confirmed the abductions via his X handle, identifying some of the victims as Imam Yahuza, Magawata Abdullahi, Malam Shehu Dakko, Imam Bala Fagon, and Na’ibi Tasi’u of Tungar Nagudai.
The clerics had traveled from communities within Bakura and Talata Mafara LGAs to attend the event hosted at Senator Yari’s residence. They were praying for peace, national unity, and the success of President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming elections. The gathering was seen as a significant religious and political moment, drawing prominent religious figures from across the area.
Bakatsine described the abduction as deeply disturbing, especially given that it happened at the home of a senior political figure. He emphasized that if even high-profile locations are not safe, ordinary citizens have no place to feel secure. “If people can be abducted while attending a gathering at the residence of a prominent political figure, then where exactly are ordinary citizens supposed to feel safe?” he questioned.
The attack underscores the persistent security challenges in Zamfara State, where banditry and kidnappings remain rampant. Communities across the state continue to face frequent attacks, disrupting daily life and eroding public confidence in security agencies. Despite numerous operations by military and police forces, criminal elements still operate with relative impunity in remote areas.
