Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has officially chosen former Transportation Minister Chibuike Amaechi as his running mate for the 2023 presidential election. The announcement, confirmed by Leader Sampson, immediate past chairman of ADC in Rivers State, came on Saturday, marking a significant development in the party’s campaign strategy. Amaechi, who previously contested for the ADC presidential ticket, lost the primary election to Atiku, despite his strong campaign and widespread support within the party.
Before the primary election, Amaechi had publicly stated that he did not purchase the ADC presidential nomination form with the intention of becoming vice president. His declaration was seen as a clear indication of his ambition to lead the party and the country. However, following his defeat in the primary, Amaechi expressed strong reservations about the outcome, accusing the process of being rigged in favour of Atiku. Some party members echoed these concerns, alleging irregularities and unfair practices during the primary vote.
Despite the initial tension and public criticism, Amaechi has now accepted the vice presidential nomination. When asked directly if Amaechi had agreed to the role, Leader Sampson responded simply with “yes,” confirming the partnership. This move signals a strategic effort by Atiku’s campaign team to unite key figures within the ADC and broaden their appeal across Nigeria’s political landscape. Amaechi’s experience as a former minister and his influence in Rivers State and the South-South region are expected to strengthen the ticket’s chances in the upcoming election.
The selection of Amaechi as running mate also reflects a shift in party dynamics, as it brings together two prominent figures who once competed for the top position. Their collaboration may help consolidate support from different factions within the ADC. With the election season approaching, the Atiku-Amaechi ticket is now officially in the race, aiming to challenge the dominant political parties in Nigeria.
As the campaign unfolds, the public will closely watch how the duo addresses concerns about the primary election and how they plan to present a united front. The partnership could influence voter sentiment, especially in the South-South and other key regions where Amaechi has strong grassroots support. This development adds a new dimension to the 2023 presidential race, as the ADC seeks to position itself as a credible alternative to the major parties.
