Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have attacked Dapchi, the headquarters of Bursari Local Government Area in Yobe State, in a violent overnight assault that left critical infrastructure destroyed and residents in fear. The attack occurred around 11 p.m. on the previous day, with armed assailants entering the town and carrying out widespread destruction. According to a local resident who spoke to DAILY POST on condition of anonymity, the terrorists burned three telecommunication masts, a police station, a hospital ambulance, and a primary healthcare facility. They also stole motorcycles and seized mobile phones from unsuspecting civilians.
The resident, speaking from an undisclosed location, revealed that the attackers operated freely in the town for approximately three hours without facing resistance. “The town currently has no telecommunication services. As we speak, I have to go to a neighbouring community to get network service,” he said, highlighting the disruption caused by the destruction of the masts. The loss of communication has left many residents isolated and unable to seek help or report developments in real time.
This latest attack marks the second time in less than a month that Dapchi has been targeted by suspected Boko Haram elements. The previous assault took place on April 4, 2026, underscoring the growing insecurity in the region. Despite the severity of the incident, as of the time of filing this report, neither the Nigerian Army nor the police have issued an official statement confirming the attack or detailing any response measures. The absence of immediate government communication has raised concerns among residents about the level of protection available in the area.
The destruction of key public infrastructure, including health and security facilities, poses serious risks to the safety and well-being of the local population. The burning of the police station and ambulance may hinder emergency responses, while the loss of healthcare services could worsen medical outcomes for vulnerable residents. The theft of motorcycles and phones further disrupts daily life and economic activities in the community.
Dapchi, located in northeastern Nigeria, has long been a target of extremist violence due to its proximity to areas historically affected by Boko Haram operations. The repeated attacks signal a possible resurgence of militant activity in the region, despite ongoing military operations. Security analysts have warned that such incidents may embolden other extremist groups if swift and visible action is not taken.
As residents remain in shock and without basic services, the government is under pressure to respond decisively. The situation in Dapchi highlights the persistent threat of terrorism in Nigeria’s northeast and the urgent need for improved security coordination and community protection. The coming days will be critical in determining whether authorities can restore order and prevent further attacks.
