Barnsley Decide Future of FIFA U17 World Cup Golden Ball Winner

Barnsley FC has released their retained and released list for the 2025-2026 season, confirming the future of four Nigerian players following the conclusion of the current campaign. Nigeria international Kelechi Nwakali has been retained by the League One club, marking a surprise decision after he had been linked with exits during both the summer and winter transfer windows. The 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup Golden Ball winner had fallen out of favour under manager Conor Hourihane but remained with the club to maintain match fitness through appearances for the development squad. In the final stretch of the season, Nwakali played in four consecutive matches as a substitute, accumulating 52 minutes of first-team action.

Nwakali, who captained Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles teams, joined Barnsley in August 2027 on a three-year contract that runs until the end of the 2025-2026 season. His retention signals a renewed opportunity for the midfielder to regain a regular spot in the first team. Despite limited playing time, his experience and pedigree remain valuable assets for the Tykes as they prepare for the upcoming season. The club’s decision to keep him reflects a commitment to integrating experienced players into their squad structure.

Meanwhile, two other Nigerian talents are set to leave the club. Owen Goodman, a 2023 Flying Eagles invitee, will return to his parent club Crystal Palace. Nathanael Ogbeta, a Manchester City academy graduate, will also return to Plymouth Argyle, where he is expected to be released upon the expiration of his contract on June 30. Ogbeta, a centre-back, has been on loan at Barnsley and will now return to the Pilgrims as his deal comes to an end.

Young forward Feyi Afuape will also bring his time at Barnsley to a close next month, marking the end of his loan spell with the club. His departure is part of the club’s broader squad restructuring as they look to build a competitive team for the new season. The movement of these players reflects Barnsley’s strategy to balance youth development with experienced signings.

As the 2025-2026 season approaches, Barnsley will rely on retained players like Nwakali to provide leadership and stability. The futures of the other Nigerian players now lie with their parent clubs, where they will seek new opportunities to further their careers. The decisions made this off-season will shape the club’s performance in the upcoming campaign.
