Barnsley Boss Explains Why Nwakali Earned Season Debut Against Stevenage: Not Out of Sorts

Kelechi Nwakali made his long-awaited season debut for Barnsley in their 1-0 defeat to Stevenage FC at the Lamex Stadium on Tuesday night, coming on as a 72nd-minute substitute in a move explained by manager Conor Hourihane as part of a strategic plan to assess fringe players ahead of the club’s transition into the next season. The Nigerian midfielder, who joined Barnsley in the summer of 2024, had been sidelined throughout the campaign due to failed transfer moves in both the summer and winter windows, which left him out of the manager’s matchday plans. His appearance marked his first involvement in competitive action for the Tykes this season, offering fans and staff a glimpse of his technical ability despite being slightly behind in match fitness.

Hourihane confirmed that the decision to bring Nwakali on was the result of an agreement between himself and the club’s hierarchy to evaluate players who had been on the periphery during the season. With only four games remaining, the manager emphasized the importance of looking ahead to the upcoming season and the anticipated arrival of a new manager. “It’s only right for everyone now to look forward onto the new season, onto the new manager, whatever that’s going to look like,” Hourihane told The Yorkshire Post. He added that the club and coaching staff had agreed to give fringe players opportunities in the final matches to assess their readiness and potential for the future.

The manager acknowledged that players like Nwakali would naturally be behind in terms of match sharpness after extended periods on the sidelines. However, he praised the midfielder’s composure and adaptability, noting that he did not appear out of sync with the pace of the game. “Clearly, they’re going to be a little bit behind on that (match fitness). And that’s going to be frustrating for them. I thought the both of them weren’t miles away from the pace of the game. They were not out of sorts, they looked no different than the rest,” Hourihane said, highlighting Nwakali’s ability to integrate quickly despite limited preparation.

Nwakali, who has earned four caps for the Nigerian national team, is currently in the final year of his contract at Oakwell. With the season winding down, the 27-year-old is keen to regain full fitness and make a strong impression as he prepares for the summer transfer window. His performance against Stevenage, though brief, could serve as a crucial stepping stone in reviving his career at a time when clubs across Europe are beginning to scout for talent ahead of the next campaign. As Barnsley looks to rebuild and restructure, Nwakali’s return to action may open doors for a new chapter in his professional journey.
