Bandits Attack Zamfara Highway, Kill Multiple Travelers and Injure Others

Armed bandits have attacked travelers along the Gusau–Magami highway in Zamfara State, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries, according to local officials. The violent incident occurred on Sunday along a critical route connecting Gusau Local Government Area to Magami, a community in the same state. Gunmen ambushed vehicles carrying passengers, opening fire without warning and causing chaos among travelers. The attack has heightened fears of insecurity in the region, where banditry remains a persistent threat.

The Councillor representing Magami Ward, Hon. Shehu Musa, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Sunday. He stated that the victims were en route from Gusau to Magami when they were targeted by armed attackers. While the exact number of casualties has not been disclosed, the councillor confirmed that several people were killed and others sustained injuries. He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and the injured, as well as to the residents of Magami Ward.

Hon. Musa urged residents to continue praying for lasting peace and an end to the insecurity plaguing Zamfara State and other parts of Nigeria. He emphasized the need for unity and resilience in the face of ongoing violence. Despite the lack of specific figures, the attack has drawn widespread concern, particularly given the frequency of similar incidents in the region.

Residents of Magami and surrounding communities have called on the federal and state governments to take immediate action. They are demanding increased security presence along the Gusau–Magami highway and other vulnerable routes. Many believe that current measures are insufficient to protect civilians from armed bandits who frequently operate with impunity. The appeal comes amid growing frustration over recurring attacks that have disrupted daily life and economic activities.

The Zamfara State government has not yet issued an official statement on the attack, but security agencies are reportedly investigating the incident. Authorities are expected to provide more details as the investigation progresses. In recent months, Zamfara has experienced a surge in bandit activities, including kidnappings, cattle rustling, and attacks on travelers. These incidents have drawn national attention and prompted calls for stronger coordination between security forces.

As the situation remains tense, residents continue to live in fear, with many avoiding travel during night hours or opting for alternative routes. The attack on the Gusau–Magami highway underscores the urgent need for sustained security interventions in the region. Moving forward, experts say addressing the root causes of insecurity, including poverty and unemployment, will be critical to achieving long-term peace.
