Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has won the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election in Ebonyi State, securing 15,300 votes out of 17,700 accredited voters in the exercise held across the state. The primary election, conducted in all 171 wards of the 13 local government areas, saw Atiku emerge as the clear frontrunner, defeating former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who received 2,200 votes, and Muhammad Hayatudeen, who polled 200 votes. The results were officially declared at Preston Hotel in Abakaliki, which served as the state’s collation centre for the event.
The Ebonyi State Presidential Primary Election Committee confirmed that a total of 18,891 voters were registered for the exercise, with 17,700 successfully accredited. The committee, led by Chairman Fred Onwe, who also serves as ADC National Vice Chairman (Diaspora), announced Atiku’s victory based on the highest number of votes cast. Onwe emphasized that the process was conducted fairly and in accordance with party guidelines, despite challenges posed by heavy rainfall across the state during the voting period.
Atiku’s win in Ebonyi State marks a significant milestone in his campaign for the ADC presidential ticket, as the state is a key electoral zone in the South-East region. His strong performance reflects widespread support among ADC members in the area. The party’s State Chairman, Silas Joseph Onu, praised the election team for their dedication and resilience, noting that they maintained professionalism even under adverse weather conditions. Onu commended the committee for ensuring transparency and order throughout the process.
Fred Onwe also extended congratulations to Atiku and all other aspirants for their conduct during the primary. He highlighted the peaceful nature of the exercise and urged party members to continue working together toward a united front in the upcoming general elections. The outcome in Ebonyi State adds momentum to Atiku’s bid to secure the ADC presidential nomination, as he now moves closer to clinching the party’s ticket.
With the primary results now confirmed, Atiku’s campaign team is expected to intensify activities in other states as the party prepares for the next phase of its presidential election process. The victory in Ebonyi State underscores Atiku’s enduring influence in Nigerian politics and his ability to mobilize support across diverse regions. As the ADC continues its internal processes, the focus will shift to consolidating support for the eventual candidate who will represent the party in the 2027 presidential election.
