Arsenal Boss Praises Super Falcons GK Nnadozie After Brighton Set Club Record

Chiamaka Nnadozie’s outstanding performance for Brighton & Hove Albion in their 1-1 draw against Arsenal Women in the Women’s Super League has earned praise from Gunners manager Renee Slegers, who highlighted the Nigerian goalkeeper’s crucial role in the Seagulls’ historic five-match unbeaten run in the league. The match took place at the Broadfield Stadium on Wednesday, with Fuka Tsunoda scoring for Brighton just before halftime, only for Frida Maanum to equalize for Arsenal in the second half. Despite Arsenal’s attacking threats, including from stars like Alessia Russo and Stina Blackstenius, Nnadozie’s commanding presence between the posts ensured Brighton secured a vital point.

Nnadozie, the three-time African Goalkeeper of the Year, made several key saves during the encounter, including a fingertip stop to deny Caitlin Foord and a sharp reflex save to keep out Lotte Wubben-Moy’s effort from a set-piece. Although the offside flag was raised on the latter, the save showcased her alertness and agility under pressure. Her performance was instrumental in helping Brighton achieve their longest unbeaten streak in the WSL since at least the 2011-12 season, marking a significant milestone for the club’s women’s team.

Renee Slegers acknowledged Brighton’s high-intensity approach and credited Nnadozie for her defensive contributions. Speaking to the BBC, Slegers said: “Brighton always come out very convinced and with a lot of intensity. It is also about the decisions we make on the pitch. It is finding the balance and building partnerships over the pitch across the season so you can make changes and it doesn’t affect the team.” She also noted that while Arsenal created chances behind Brighton’s defense, Nnadozie’s ability to defend that space required “a lot of detail and quality in execution.”

The result keeps Brighton’s hopes alive in the WSL, and their next major challenge comes in the FA Cup semifinal, where they will face Liverpool on Sunday. Nnadozie’s consistent performances have not only elevated Brighton’s standing in the league but also reinforced her reputation as one of Africa’s most reliable goalkeepers. Her contributions have been vital in Manchester City’s eventual WSL title win, as their dominance was partly enabled by the pressure Brighton’s strong defensive unit, led by Nnadozie, applied on other teams.

As the season nears its conclusion, Nnadozie’s influence continues to grow, both for her club and for Nigeria’s national team, the Super Falcons. Her ability to deliver under pressure has made her a key figure in Brighton’s resurgence, and her performances are likely to attract further attention from top clubs and international scouts. The upcoming FA Cup semifinal against Liverpool will be another test of her resilience and leadership, as Brighton aim to make history in the competition.
