The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially announced Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election, marking a significant development in Nigeria’s political landscape. The National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC confirmed the nomination through its chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, who disclosed the news via X on Friday. Yilwatda stated that the party formally received the presidential nomination forms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and Vice President Kashim Shettima, GCON, ahead of the upcoming general election.
The announcement came after months of speculation that President Tinubu might replace Shettima with a northern Christian candidate to balance the party’s ticket. However, the APC leadership’s decision reaffirms the current leadership duo’s commitment to continuity and the Renewed Hope Agenda. Yilwatda described the moment as “defining,” emphasizing the party’s collective resolve to sustain progress and deepen national development across all sectors.
The nomination forms were presented on behalf of President Tinubu by his Special Adviser on Political and Other Matters, Hon. Ibrahim Masari, during a formal ceremony held at the Continental Hotel in Abuja. The event was well-attended by key APC leaders and stakeholders, reflecting the party’s unity and confidence in the Tinubu-Shettima ticket. Among those present were Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who also serves as Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, as well as Governors Mai Mala Buni, Nasir Idris, Abba Kabir Yusuf, Uba Sani, Babagana Umara Zulum, and Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
The gathering underscored the APC’s strong internal cohesion and its determination to consolidate gains made under the Renewed Hope Agenda. Yilwatda highlighted that the party remains focused on strengthening grassroots support, expanding its outreach, and working toward a more prosperous, secure, and inclusive Nigeria. He emphasized that the event was not just a procedural step but a symbolic reaffirmation of the party’s vision and leadership.
As the 2027 election draws nearer, the APC’s decision to retain Shettima as Tinubu’s running mate signals a strategic choice to maintain stability and continuity. The party’s leadership believes this pairing will enhance their chances of securing a renewed mandate from Nigerian voters. The announcement is expected to influence political dynamics across the country, particularly as other parties begin to finalize their own presidential tickets.
With the APC’s presidential nomination now officially on record, attention turns to the next phase of campaign preparations and the broader electoral contest. The Tinubu-Shettima ticket will likely become a central focus in the lead-up to the 2027 elections, shaping public discourse and party strategies nationwide.
