Anosike Secures PDP Gubernatorial Ticket in Abia, Cites Poor State Management

Kelechi Anosike has secured the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship ticket for Abia State following a closely monitored primary election held on Sunday, positioning him as the party’s standard-bearer in the 2027 general elections. Anosike emerged victorious with 16,543 votes, defeating former Commissioner for Information, John Okiyi Kalu, who polled 3,145 votes. Olugu Kalu Ugba, former Deputy Chief of Staff to ex-Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, received 961 votes in the contest.

The result was officially announced by Abraham Amah, Chairman of the PDP in Abia State, at the party’s headquarters in Umuahia. The announcement was made with the approval of the PDP electoral panel for Abia State, chaired by Chris Nnadi. The primary election was conducted across all 184 electoral wards in the state, with oversight from officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Nigerian Police Force, and other security agencies to ensure transparency and fairness.

Amah disclosed that while results from five wards were initially withheld due to alleged refusal by some individuals to submit them, the results from the remaining 179 wards were sufficient to determine the winner. He emphasized that the electoral process adhered to party guidelines and was conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner.

In his remarks to journalists, Kelechi Anosike, the newly declared PDP gubernatorial candidate, highlighted that Abia State is rich in resources but suffers from poor governance. He pledged to transform the state into a major agricultural and industrial hub if elected. Anosike called on all PDP members to unite and work together towards a successful campaign, stressing the importance of solidarity in the upcoming election.

The victory marks a significant milestone for Anosike, who now leads the PDP’s campaign for the Abia State Government House in 2027. His campaign platform focuses on economic development, job creation, and improved infrastructure, aiming to address the state’s long-standing developmental challenges. With the party’s internal contest concluded, attention now shifts to the general election preparations and the broader political landscape in Abia State.

As the 2027 elections draw nearer, Anosike’s emergence as the PDP’s flagbearer sets the stage for a competitive race, with the opposition parties expected to nominate their own candidates in the coming months. The outcome of this primary could influence voter sentiment and party dynamics across the state.
