Amotekun parades couple for burgling former Ondo Speakers home

The Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps, has arrested a couple in connection with a burglary at the country home of former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Jumoke Akindele, in Okitipupa. The suspects, Samson Osowe, 28, and his wife Ayo Oguneso, 22, were apprehended after an intelligence-driven operation that tracked stolen items to a transporter preparing to smuggle them to Lagos. Seven mobile phones and other valuables were recovered during the operation, which also foiled the suspects’ attempt to sell the stolen goods outside the state.

The arrest followed a coordinated effort by Amotekun operatives who monitored the movement of the stolen property. The transporter, who was to carry the items out of Okitipupa, was also apprehended. According to the agency, an accomplice involved in the transportation chain was arrested after the suspects confessed to their roles in the crime. The Commander of the Amotekun Corps in Ondo State, Adetunji Adeleye, confirmed the arrests during a public parade of the suspects.

Adeleye stated, “I’m happy to let you know that all the phones stolen are here in front of the suspects, and the two suspects are right here with us — Samson Osowe, 28, male, and his wife Ayo Oguneso, 22. Including the transporter who was supposed to take the phones out of Okitipupa to Lagos.” He added that the investigation has been expanded to include other individuals linked to criminal activities in the local government area. “We put everything in place to arrest them, but they will go to court immediately, and the phones will be released on bond to the honourable,” he said.

The burglary occurred in the middle of the night on Sunday, according to Jumoke Akindele, who confirmed that expensive mobile handsets and personal belongings were stolen. She also noted that several windows at her residence were damaged during the break-in. Akindele praised the Amotekun Corps for their swift response and effectiveness in curbing crime in the state. She called for the establishment of a state police in Nigeria, citing the success of Amotekun as strong evidence for such a constitutional change.

She said, “I have often been regaled with the heroic efforts of the Amotekun Corps to battle and curtail all forms of crimes and insecurity in Ondo State and to state that I am awed by their dexterity, their determination, their bravery and commitment to duty is an understatement.” Akindele also commended Corps Commandant Adetunji for his leadership, adding that investigations are ongoing with most of the perpetrators now in Amotekun custody. The case underscores the growing role of state security agencies in tackling crime and highlights the need for sustained public safety reforms across Nigeria.
