Agali Reveals Inside Story of How He Scouted Okoye for Nigeria: He Didnt Say Super Eagles

Former Super Eagles striker Victor Agali has revealed how he discovered Maduka Okoye for Nigeria, sharing that the goalkeeper initially expressed interest in playing for the national youth teams rather than the senior Super Eagles. Agali, who served as a scout for the national team, tracked Okoye while he was playing for Fortuna Düsseldorf’s reserve team in Germany. At the time, the Super Eagles were grappling with a goalkeeping crisis after Carl Ikeme’s retirement due to illness, making the search for a reliable replacement urgent.

Agali explained that his scouting role involved identifying eligible Nigerian talents across Europe, often working closely with coaches and football contacts he had built over the years. He recalled attending a reserve team match in Düsseldorf, where he watched Okoye in action. The connection was strengthened by the fact that the Fortuna Düsseldorf coach at the time had previously coached Agali at Hansa Rostock. “I speak German very well,” Agali said on the Home Turf Podcast. “He said he was Nigerian, so after the game, I spoke with the father. The boy came to me, and we were having goalkeeper issues at that time.”

The goalkeeper’s father encouraged Agali to speak with Maduka, who expressed willingness to represent Nigeria—but only at the youth level. “The boy didn’t say Super Eagles,” Agali noted. “He was young; U17 and U20, he was ready.” Despite the initial hesitation, Agali brought the player to the attention of then-Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr. Rohr, however, insisted that Okoye needed to be playing in a top-flight league before being considered for the senior team.

As a result, Okoye was loaned to a top-flight club in the Netherlands to gain experience at a higher level. His breakthrough came unexpectedly in October 2019 when he was introduced off the bench to replace an injured Francis Uzoho during a friendly match against Brazil. He had been an unused substitute in the previous month’s game against Ukraine. Okoye’s first official appearance for Nigeria came in November 2020 during an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone, which also marked his cap-tie to the national team.

Agali’s discovery of Okoye has since proven crucial for Nigeria’s goalkeeping department. The goalkeeper has since become a key figure in the Super Eagles’ defensive line, showcasing his talent on the international stage. His journey from reserve team player in Germany to national team regular highlights the importance of scouting and development in Nigerian football. As the Super Eagles continue to build for future tournaments, Okoye’s story remains a testament to how talent, when properly identified and nurtured, can rise to meet the nation’s expectations.
