INEC Ondo Engages Stakeholders in Preparations for 2027 General Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ondo State has commenced stakeholder engagement in the Ondo North Senatorial District as part of its preparations for the 2027 General Election. The meeting, held in Owo, brought together political party representatives, security agencies, traditional rulers, and other key groups to discuss electoral readiness and public participation. Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Dr. Mutiu Agboke led the session, emphasizing that every valid vote will play a decisive role in shaping the outcome of the next election.

Dr. Agboke assured Nigerians that INEC remains committed to delivering a peaceful, credible, transparent, and inclusive electoral process. He stressed that voters’ choices will not only be counted but will directly determine who wins office. “People’s valid votes will not only count; they will be the determining factor in the next election,” he declared during the meeting. This message was aimed at boosting public confidence in the electoral system and encouraging active voter participation.

The REC announced that the nationwide display of the preliminary register of voters will begin on October 9, 2026, across all 203 electoral wards in Ondo State. This exercise is designed to allow eligible citizens to verify their names, addresses, and other personal details on the voter list. Any citizen who finds discrepancies or errors can file claims or objections during this period, ensuring accuracy and inclusivity in the voter roll.

Simultaneously, the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will also commence. Dr. Agboke urged citizens—especially those who transferred their registration during the recent Continuous Voter Registration (CVR)—to collect their cards promptly. Possession of a PVC is essential for voting, and timely collection ensures no eligible voter is disenfranchised due to administrative delays.

He called on political parties, community leaders, and civil society organizations to collaborate with INEC in promoting issue-based campaigns. Agboke specifically warned against vote buying and political violence, urging stakeholders to uphold electoral laws and maintain peace before, during, and after the polls. He emphasized that compliance with regulations is critical to ensuring free and fair elections.

Following the meeting, Dr. Agboke, accompanied by Administrative Secretary Adenike Tadese and members of the commission’s management team, paid a courtesy visit to the Olowo of Owo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III. The traditional ruler commended INEC’s efforts to modernize Nigeria’s electoral process through technology and pledged the palace’s continued support. He also promised to mobilize his subjects to participate actively and peacefully in the 2027 elections.

With these engagements, INEC is laying the groundwork for a well-organized and widely trusted electoral process. As the nation looks ahead to 2027, the focus remains on strengthening civic education, enhancing voter access, and ensuring that every vote counts in shaping Nigeria’s democratic future.
