2027: Ogun APM Guber Candidate Urges FG to Allow INEC Operate Independently

Babajide Matthew, the governorship candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) in Ogun State, has called on the Federal Government to uphold the independence and institutional autonomy of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as it prepares for the 2027 general elections. In an open letter addressed to INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, Matthew emphasized the importance of maintaining a neutral and professional electoral environment to ensure public trust in Nigeria’s democratic processes.

Matthew commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for fostering an atmosphere that allows INEC to carry out its constitutional duties without political interference. He stressed that continuing this support is essential for building confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the upcoming elections. The APM candidate highlighted recent electoral exercises, particularly the Osun State governorship election, as evidence of INEC’s growing commitment to fairness, professionalism, and due process.

In his letter, Matthew expressed optimism about INEC’s leadership under Prof. Amupitan, noting that many Nigerians are watching with renewed hope for credible elections. He acknowledged the commission’s Legal Department for its diligent work in safeguarding the integrity of electoral outcomes and specifically praised the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ogun State, Mrs. Saseyi Ibiyemi, for her dedicated service.

As a political aspirant, Matthew affirmed his duty to participate in the democratic process while also stressing his broader responsibility as a Nigerian citizen to advocate for free, fair, and transparent elections. He stated that his primary interest lies in ensuring that electoral outcomes truly reflect the will of the people, not partisan interests.

The call for INEC’s independence comes at a critical time as Nigeria prepares for national elections that will test the strength of its democratic institutions. Matthew’s appeal underscores the growing demand among Nigerians for electoral reforms and institutional accountability. His message reinforces the need for sustained government support to ensure that INEC remains insulated from political pressures.

With the 2027 elections approaching, Matthew’s statement serves as a reminder that credible elections require more than just technical preparations—they demand political will, institutional integrity, and public trust. As Nigeria moves forward, the role of INEC in delivering transparent and inclusive elections will remain central to the nation’s democratic future.
