Abia State Governor Alex Otti, American singer Adina Howard, basketball legend Russell Westbrook, and fashion icon Karl Kani are among the distinguished Africans and Americans set to be honoured at the 2026 Afro Awards in Los Angeles, California. The prestigious event, scheduled for Saturday, will celebrate excellence across leadership, entertainment, sports, fashion, business, and public service. The awards aim to highlight individuals and organisations that have made significant contributions to their communities, nations, and the global stage.
The Afro Awards, founded by Chief Taiwo Oduala, will recognise Governor Otti with the Transformative Leadership and Human Development Award. In a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday, Oduala praised Otti as a distinguished leader whose achievements in governance and human development have earned international recognition. He emphasized that effective leadership must focus on humanitarian services, economic growth, and societal progress for the betterment of people.
Oduala described the Afro Awards as a unique Afro-centric platform that celebrates excellence, creativity, and impactful contributions to society. The 2026 edition will continue the tradition of uniting influential personalities from diverse fields, including entertainment, fashion, sports, business, and public service. “This is bringing Africa and the World together,” he said, noting that recipients range from political leaders and business executives to entertainers, athletes, filmmakers, and fashion designers.
The awards have previously honoured notable Nigerians such as business magnate Aliko Dangote, former President Goodluck Jonathan, Air Peace CEO Dr. Allen Onyema, music star Davido, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, and Kwara First Lady Prof. Olufolake Abdulrazaq. These recognitions reflect the broad spectrum of sectors where Africans are making lasting impacts — from leadership and aviation to music and community development.
Since its inception, the Afro Awards has celebrated over 5,000 individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to humanitarianism and philanthropy within African and American communities. The event serves as both a reward and an inspiration, encouraging others to contribute positively to global society. As the 2026 ceremony approaches, it promises to further elevate the profiles of African and Afro-descendant achievers on the world stage.
