A man identified as Adejuwon Adekunle, popularly known as Asa, was killed by suspected gunmen in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, early Tuesday morning. The incident occurred around 2am near a recreation centre in the Dele Yes Sir community, where Adekunle was reportedly attacked and shot by armed assailants. According to the Osun State Police Command, the victim was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at a morgue for further procedures.
The police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the details during a press briefing on Tuesday. He stated that intelligence reports indicated a group of armed men entered the area and began firing sporadically. One of the victims, Adejuwon Adekunle, was hit and immediately taken to the hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries before medical staff could stabilise him.
Ojelabi added that the attack took place between 1:30am and 2am, suggesting the assailants had tracked Adekunle to the location. While the exact motive remains unclear, preliminary investigations point to a possible cult-related motive. The police have not yet identified or apprehended any suspects involved in the shooting.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Zungura, has directed that the case be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for thorough investigation. Authorities are currently gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing. No arrests have been made as of the time of reporting.
The Osun State Police Command has assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to bring the perpetrators to justice. They urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station. The police also appealed for information from anyone who may have seen the attackers or witnessed the incident.
This tragic event adds to growing concerns about insecurity in Osun State, particularly in urban areas like Osogbo. Residents have expressed fear and anxiety following the attack, especially given the possibility of cult involvement. The police have promised to intensify patrols and surveillance in high-risk zones to prevent further violence.
As investigations continue, families and communities are left mourning the loss of Adejuwon Adekunle, whose life was cut short in what appears to be a targeted attack. The incident underscores the need for sustained security measures and community cooperation to combat rising crime in the state. Authorities are expected to release more updates as the probe progresses.
