Nigerian troops under Operation FANSAN YANMA have conducted a targeted air strike against suspected terrorists in Yankuzo community, Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, resulting in the death of several fighters, including a key associate of notorious bandit leader Musa Commander. The military operation, carried out on the evening of September 7, 2026, involved five aircraft that launched a coordinated aerial assault on the area, according to a report by counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, who shared the details on X on Tuesday.
Makama cited local sources confirming that the aircraft engaged armed suspects within the community, with multiple fighters killed during the engagement. While the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, reports indicate that Isiya Gurgu, identified as a close ally of Musa Commander, was among those eliminated. Musa Commander is known to be linked to the Ado Aleru network, a criminal syndicate operating across several communities in Zamfara and neighbouring regions.
The Ado Aleru network has been associated with widespread insecurity, including cattle rustling, kidnappings, and violent attacks on villages. Tsamiya and other settlements in the region are also believed to be under the influence of this group, contributing to ongoing instability in the area. Security forces reportedly exercised caution during the operation to avoid harming civilians, focusing their strikes on individuals seen carrying weapons or wearing military-style attire.
In addition to fatalities, several other suspected terrorists were injured during the airstrike. Yankuzo has long served as a stronghold for armed groups connected to the Ado Aleru network, with residents frequently subjected to threats and violence from these fighters. The recent military action marks a significant escalation in efforts to dismantle terrorist enclaves in the region.
Security agencies are still gathering more information about the full impact of the operation, including casualty figures and potential damage to infrastructure. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to provide further updates on the situation in Yankuzo and surrounding areas. This development underscores the Nigerian military’s continued commitment to restoring peace and security in northern Nigeria, particularly in zones plagued by banditry and terrorism.
