The Edo State Police Command has arrested 22 suspects in connection with serious crimes including kidnapping, murder, defilement, and armed robbery across the state, marking a significant boost in security operations. The arrests were made during coordinated efforts involving multiple security agencies, which also resulted in the killing of one suspected kidnapper and the arrest of another. These developments were disclosed by ASP Eno Ikoedem, the command’s Public Relations Officer, in a statement released to journalists in Benin City.
Among those apprehended are nine suspected armed robbers, seven individuals accused of murder, and one person charged with defilement. The police operation underscores a sustained commitment to intelligence-led policing and the protection of lives and property within Edo State. Ikoedem emphasized that these successes reflect the command’s dedication to crime prevention and community safety.
A major breakthrough came on August 30, 2026, when operatives from the Ugbor Division, working alongside the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC), arrested nine members of a feared 15-man armed robbery gang. The operation began at approximately 7:30 am after receiving credible intelligence. The divisional police officer led the team that tracked and apprehended the suspects, who had been terrorizing residents in the Benin City metropolis.
In addition to the arrests, a combined team of security operatives successfully rescued five kidnapped victims. Among them was a woman and her three children, who were freed during a separate anti-kidnapping operation. The rescue highlights the effectiveness of joint efforts between different security units in tackling criminal activities.
ASP Ikoedem reiterated that the command remains focused on proactive measures to combat crime and ensure public safety. She noted that intelligence gathering and swift response have been key factors in recent successes. The police continue to urge citizens to report suspicious activities and cooperate with security forces to maintain peace.
These operations come amid increasing concerns over insecurity in parts of the state, and the latest results are expected to restore confidence among residents. As the Edo State Police Command intensifies its efforts, communities are encouraged to remain vigilant and support ongoing initiatives aimed at reducing crime. The crackdown signals a stronger push toward long-term stability and safer neighborhoods across Edo State.
