A major political realignment has taken place in Kano State as former senators Rufai Sani Hanga, Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, and Senator Masud El-Jibrin Doguwa officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), joining over 136,038 other defectors during the unveiling of President Bola Tinubu’s campaign groups ahead of the 2027 general elections. The mass defection occurred at a high-profile event in Kano, signaling a significant shift in the state’s political landscape and reinforcing the APC’s growing dominance in the region.
The trio, who previously represented Kano State in the Senate, were among numerous politicians from various parties who switched allegiance to the ruling party. Also defecting were Ali Datti Yako, the Kano State Deputy Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), along with members of the party’s state executive committee. Former Ungogo Local Government Chairman Badaru Umar joined the APC alongside supporters of Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the former Kano APC governorship candidate whose political group has been active in mobilizing support for the party.
Former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Isyaku Ali Danja, brought his loyalists into the APC fold, while former PDP deputy governorship candidate Yusuf Bello Danbatta and his team also made the switch.
