The digital system is expected to reduce delays, minimize errors, prevent duplication and fraud, and make record retrieval easier for individuals and government agencies. Accurate birth and death records are essential for effective planning in healthcare, education, housing, employment, and social welfare programs. Aiyejina urged parents, healthcare providers, traditional rulers, religious organizations, and other stakeholders to support the initiative by ensuring timely registration of births and deaths.
Agnes Ibadin, the NPC state director in Edo, confirmed that digital birth registration has already begun in health centres across the state. Registrars are collaborating with healthcare providers to capture birth data from women attending immunization clinics. “We go to every health centre to capture births from women who come for immunisation. We still have an MoU with the health providers,” she said. This approach ensures that even people in remote communities do not have to travel long distances to register their children’s births.
Health centres are now serving as registration contact points for surrounding communities, significantly improving access to civil registration services. The initiative is part of the NPC’s broader strategy to make vital registration more inclusive and equitable. A practical demonstration of the digital registration process was also conducted during the event to showcase how the system works.
This digital transformation is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s data infrastructure and support better governance. As the NPC continues to roll out the system across the country, it aims to ensure that every Nigerian, whether at home or abroad, can access vital registration services with ease and confidence.
