A 40-year-old man, Clement Anthony, has been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command in connection with the murder of a prominent community leader, Jacob Bature, in Bauchi metropolis. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, July 19, around 7:00 p.m., when Anthony allegedly attacked Bature with a locally made single-barrel gun. Police swiftly apprehended the suspect after the shooting, recovering the firearm and one expended cartridge from him. The victim, 55-year-old Jacob Bature, served as the Mai Anguwa of Unguwar Ngas in the Inkil area of Bauchi Local Government Area.
Bature sustained severe gunshot wounds to his right ribs during the attack and collapsed at the scene. A resident alerted the ‘A’ Division Township Police Station at approximately 8:30 p.m., prompting an immediate response from law enforcement. Emergency responders rushed the injured man to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi, but he was confirmed dead on arrival. His body has since been moved to the hospital’s morgue for autopsy, as part of the ongoing investigation.
The case has now been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further probing. Authorities are expected to charge the suspect, Clement Anthony, in court once the investigation is concluded. The Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has strongly condemned the killing and assured the public that justice will be served. He emphasized the command’s resolve to combat violent crimes and curb the illegal possession of firearms in the state.
Aliyu also urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to their nearest police station.
