Troops Neutralize Explosive Device in Sambisa Forest

Troops of the 26 Task Force Brigade Garrison under Operation HADIN KAI have discovered and safely neutralized an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by suspected terrorists in the Sambisa Forest, Borno State. The device was found during a routine fighting patrol in the Dagari area of Bama Local Government Area on Monday, July 15, at approximately 9:50 a.m. Security expert Zagazola Makama confirmed the incident in a post on X, emphasizing the ongoing threat posed by insurgents in the region. The IED had been buried in a farming zone, likely intended to target military personnel or civilians returning to cultivate their lands.

The discovery highlights the persistent danger faced by farmers and security forces in the North-East, even in areas previously declared liberated. Insurgents continue to use IEDs as a tactic to disrupt civilian life and undermine military operations. In response, Nigerian troops have intensified clearance and route patrol activities across the region. The explosive device was immediately secured by soldiers, who then carried out a controlled disposal in situ following standard explosive ordnance disposal protocols. No injuries or damage occurred during the operation.

This incident underscores the critical role of Counter-Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) operations in ensuring the safety of communities and agricultural activities in Borno State. Operation HADIN KAI, the military’s flagship counter-insurgency initiative in the North-East, has been actively working to clear landmines, IEDs, and other explosive hazards left behind by Boko Haram and other extremist groups. The successful disposal of this device reflects the professionalism and preparedness of Nigerian troops in handling such threats.

Zagazola Makama noted that aggressive patrols remain a key component of the military’s strategy to detect and neutralize hidden explosive devices. These efforts are essential for restoring normalcy and encouraging displaced persons to return to their homes and farms. The discovery in Dagari is part of a broader pattern of IED threats in the Sambisa Forest, a known insurgent stronghold. Despite the challenges, security forces continue to make progress in securing critical routes and farmlands.

As the military maintains its focus on clearing explosive threats, communities in Borno and surrounding areas are being encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. The success in neutralizing this IED serves as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to protect lives and livelihoods. The continued clearance operations are expected to further enhance safety and support the government’s efforts to rebuild the North-East.
