Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Delta State, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) state chapter of orchestrating a violent attempt to block his access to a community town hall meeting. The incident, which occurred during his campaign outreach, allegedly involved thugs sent to intimidate him and his supporters. Iyovwaye condemned the act as an attack on democracy and urged security agencies to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice.
He described the encounter as a dangerous escalation in political tension ahead of the 2023 elections, stating that his team was nearly prevented from holding a peaceful engagement with voters. Despite provocation, Iyovwaye commended his supporters for maintaining discipline and avoiding retaliation, which he said prevented the situation from turning violent. He emphasized that such acts of intimidation cannot be tolerated in a democratic society.
Iyovwaye called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to ensure that all political parties are allowed to campaign freely without harassment or threats. He also appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) in the state to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged attack. “Democracy cannot flourish where political opponents are attacked simply for meeting with their own people,” he said, reiterating his commitment to peaceful and lawful political activities.
The NDC candidate stressed that his party remains focused on delivering good governance, practical solutions, and people-centered leadership to address the challenges facing Delta State. He urged the ruling APC to shift its attention from political intimidation to tackling pressing issues affecting the welfare and development of the people. Iyovwaye maintained that while no party has a monopoly on violence, the NDC will continue to campaign peacefully and within the bounds of the law.
He reiterated the party’s vision of restoring hope, strengthening governance, and rebuilding public trust in leadership. “As we move across the state, our message remains clear: together, we will Reset Delta,” Iyovwaye declared. The APC had not issued any official response to the allegations at the time of reporting. This incident highlights growing concerns over political violence and the need for security agencies to protect the democratic process in Delta State.
