APC Sweeps 18 Chairmanship and 192 Councillorship Seats in Edo LG Poll

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has been declared the winner of all 18 local government chairmanship and 192 ward councillorship seats in the Edo State local government elections held on Saturday, July 11, 2026. The Edo Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) announced the results during a press conference in Benin City on Sunday, July 12, 2026, confirming the party’s sweeping victory across the state. Chairman of EDSIEC, Mr. Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, stated that the election was conducted in accordance with the Edo State Local Government Electoral Law 2022, as amended in 2026, and other relevant regulations.

Aifuobhokhan emphasized that every stage of the electoral process — from accreditation and voting to sorting, counting, collation, and declaration — was carried out professionally and in compliance with legal frameworks. He noted that returning officers at both ward and local government levels duly announced and declared results within their jurisdictions, forming the basis for the commission’s final declaration. The APC’s dominance was evident in every local government area and ward, with no other party securing any of the contested positions.

The EDSIEC chairman commended the returning officers for their professionalism, impartiality, and adherence to the law throughout the election process. He expressed satisfaction with the overall conduct of the elections, describing them as peaceful despite minor operational challenges reported in a few locations. Aifuobhokhan stressed that these isolated issues did not significantly impact the integrity or outcome of the election, affirming the credibility of the results.

He further urged any candidate or political party dissatisfied with the electoral process to pursue redress through lawful channels as provided under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Aifuobhokhan also extended appreciation to political parties, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organizations, community leaders, youths, women groups, and the general electorate for their peaceful participation and conduct during the elections.

Certificates of return for the newly elected chairmen and councillors are scheduled to be presented on Monday, July 13, 2026. The commission also pledged to continue improving future electoral processes through periodic reviews and stakeholder engagement. The outcome of the election marks a significant moment in Edo State’s political landscape, with the APC consolidating its control over local governance structures. This victory is expected to influence policy implementation and development initiatives across the state in the coming years.
