The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has successfully rescued four persons abducted during a violent kidnapping attack at the Yellow House area of Mpape, Abuja, in a high-risk operation that ended with a fierce gunfight between police and armed kidnappers. The incident occurred on July 8, 2026, at approximately 10:40 pm, when suspected kidnappers invaded the residential area, opening fire and taking four residents hostage. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the rescue and provided details of the operation in a statement released on Friday, July 10, 2026.
Upon receiving the distress call, the Commissioner of Police for the FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, swiftly deployed operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Katampe and Mpape Police Divisions, and the 24 Police Mobile Force Squadron to the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that the assailants had shot two victims before fleeing with the hostages. The two injured were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. One victim, identified as Mr. Babangida, tragically died from his injuries, while the second, who sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, is currently responding well to medical care.
The kidnappers forced the four hostages through Jikoko Hills toward Ushafa Forest, where they were believed to be hiding. Police operatives maintained a relentless pursuit throughout the night and into the following days. On Friday, July 10, 2026, at around 12:05 AM, the team located the kidnappers near Jikoko Hills as they were moving toward Ushafa Forest with the hostages. The suspects opened fire upon sighting the approaching police, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.
Despite the resistance, the police demonstrated superior tactical capability, overwhelming the kidnappers and forcing them to abandon the hostages. The four victims were rescued unharmed and safely evacuated from the forest, reuniting with their families. The police continue to pursue the fleeing suspects, who retreated deeper into the hills and forest in an attempt to evade capture. Authorities have not yet disclosed the number of suspects involved or their identities.
This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in Abuja, particularly in areas like Mpape, which have seen increased criminal activity in recent months. The successful rescue operation highlights the commitment and effectiveness of the FCT Police Command in protecting lives and restoring public confidence. As investigations continue, security agencies remain on high alert to prevent further attacks and apprehend those responsible.
