The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested six suspects over the unlawful killing of two innocent travellers in Gidan Kaku village, Birnin Yero, following false accusations that they were kidnappers. The incident occurred on 1st July, 2026, when Muhammadu Sani, 45, and Aliyu Mohammed, 40, both from Umar Village in Igabi Local Government Area, were riding a motorcycle to Tudun Wada, Zaria, to visit a sick relative. As they passed through Gidan Kalu Village, unidentified individuals became suspicious upon seeing them on a new motorcycle and shouted “thieves,” sparking a dangerous misunderstanding.
Fearing for their lives, the two men abandoned their motorcycle and fled. Despite their attempts to explain their innocence and the fact that some of the attackers knew them personally, they were chased down by an angry mob and brutally lynched. The tragic event highlights the dangers of mob justice and the urgent need for public awareness about due process. The police responded swiftly, with operatives from the Birnin Yero Division launching an investigation and arresting Abdullahi Mukailu Kigo and five others linked to the killings.
According to DSP Mansir Hassan, the police spokesperson, the suspects have confessed to their involvement and are currently in custody. Authorities are still working to identify and apprehend other individuals who may have participated in the violence. The Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, strongly condemned the incident and assured the public that all those found responsible, regardless of their status or influence, will be prosecuted under the law.
CP Muhammad emphasized that no person has the right to take the law into their own hands, warning that anyone engaging in jungle justice will face legal consequences. He reiterated that every accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty, a fundamental principle of the Nigerian legal system. He urged residents to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or security agency for proper investigation, rather than resorting to vigilante action.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by false accusations and mob mentality, especially in rural communities where security challenges are often compounded by misinformation. As investigations continue, the Kaduna State Police Command remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for the victims. This case underscores the need for greater public education on legal rights and the dangers of extrajudicial killings.
