The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has demanded a swift and transparent investigation into the killings of two Nigerian nationals, Emeka Charles Iroegbu and Musa Yunana Joe, in South Africa, urging authorities to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice. The call comes after the alleged deaths on June 28, 2024, in separate incidents—one in Sunnyside, Pretoria, and the other in Witbank, Mpumalanga Province. NUSA’s national publicity secretary, Akindele Olunloyo, described the murders as “senseless and brutal,” emphasizing the need for exhaustive action by South African law enforcement.
Olunloyo stressed that the Nigerian diaspora organization is working closely with the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria and the Consulate General in Johannesburg to monitor developments. The group has also initiated direct engagement with local police forces to ensure a thorough investigation and to safeguard the rights of Nigerians in the country. “We demand prompt, transparent and exhaustive investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and face the full wrath of the law,” he stated.
The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg issued a statement condemning the killing of Emeka Iroegbu, who was allegedly shot by security officers from the Tshwane Metro Police in Sunnyside. The incident has raised serious concerns, especially as it follows the April 20 extrajudicial killing of another Nigerian national, Andrew Ekpenyong, also attributed to the same police unit. Consul General Ninikanwa Okey-Uche expressed deep concern over the pattern of violence and called for accountability.
In a separate but equally distressing case, Musa Yunana Joe was allegedly brutally killed by unidentified suspects in Witbank on the same day. The consulate condemned this act as well, highlighting the growing insecurity faced by Nigerians in South Africa. Both incidents have sparked alarm within the Nigerian community, prompting NUSA to issue a public appeal for calm and caution.
NUSA urged all Nigerians in South Africa to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and cautious in their daily activities. The organization advised citizens to be aware of their surroundings and to report any suspicious behaviour to local authorities immediately. The group emphasized the importance of community safety and cooperation with law enforcement.
