Two Killed, Over 40 Cows Stolen in Suspected Herdsmen Attack on Benue Community

Suspected Fulani cattle rustlers attacked Okpafie community in Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State on Tuesday night, killing two people and stealing more than 40 cows. The violent incident occurred at Oyilawu village in Okonobo Ward, leaving residents in shock and demanding immediate government intervention. One of the victims, identified as Benjamin, a native of Okpafie, was killed during the assault. The attackers, armed and on horseback, struck swiftly, making off with the livestock before local youths could respond.

A local source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that many young men in the community were watching a football match at the time of the attack. This delayed their ability to mobilize and confront the assailants. By the time the youths organized themselves, the attackers had already fled with the stolen cattle. The source also disclosed that a member of the local vigilante group was killed at Aidogodo while trying to intercept the fleeing herdsmen. This second fatality highlights the dangers faced by community defenders in the ongoing conflict over grazing routes and land use.

The attack in Okpafie follows a similar violent incident in Sai community, located in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State. In that earlier assault, suspected armed herders killed several people, injured many others, and set houses ablaze, forcing residents to flee their homes. Authorities have not yet released an official casualty figure for the Sai attack, leaving families in limbo and communities on edge. These recurring incidents underscore the growing insecurity in the region, particularly in areas where herders and farmers often clash over land and resources.

As of the time of filing this report, the Benue State Police Command had not issued any official statement regarding the Okpokwu attack. This lack of immediate response has raised concerns among residents about the government’s ability to protect vulnerable communities. The absence of swift law enforcement action may further embolden armed groups, increasing the risk of future attacks. Local leaders and civil society groups are calling for urgent security measures, including increased patrols and better coordination between police and community vigilantes.

The recurring violence in Benue State, especially in rural areas like Okpokwu and Katsina-Ala, reflects a deeper crisis of insecurity linked to herdsmen-farmer conflicts. These clashes have displaced thousands, disrupted farming activities, and strained community relations. With no clear resolution in sight, the people of Okpafie and surrounding communities remain vulnerable. The government must act decisively to restore peace and ensure justice for the victims, as the safety of innocent civilians hangs in the balance.
