Yobe State Police Command has arrested eight suspected members of a theft syndicate following a surge in shop breaking, shoplifting, and burglary cases across Damaturu metropolis, with several stolen goods recovered during a coordinated operation. The arrests, made on Monday, were carried out by operatives of the ‘A’ Division Damaturu in collaboration with local vigilante members, based on credible intelligence about criminal activities in Abbari, Nasarawa, and Gwange areas. The police confirmed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday by their Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim.
The suspects, identified as Abdullahi Musa (18) of Abbari, Khalifa Mohammed (20) of Gwange, Alhassan Ali (21) of Nayinawa, Ibrahim Shehu (21) of Abbari, Ali Mohammed (22) of Abbari, Abba Shetima (21) of Pompomari, Boniface Cosmos (25) of Jerusalem, and Sakinat Usman (46) of Nasarawa, are now in custody. Preliminary investigations have linked them to multiple incidents of burglary and theft in the affected communities. All eight suspects have confessed to their involvement and are currently assisting police in further investigations.
Among the recovered items are two five-litre gallons of Kings vegetable oil, forty packs of Indomie noodles, 132 sachets of Peak powdered milk, and three Android mobile phones. The police stated that efforts are ongoing to recover additional stolen goods and apprehend other fleeing accomplices. The operation was launched after a noticeable increase in criminal activities, prompting swift action from law enforcement to restore security and confidence in the area.
SP Dungus Abdulkarim emphasized the importance of community cooperation in curbing crime. He urged business owners and residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station without delay. The police also reassured the public that they are committed to ensuring safety and order in Damaturu metropolis. The arrests mark a significant step in tackling organized theft and protecting citizens’ property.
