Six suspected cultists have been arrested by operatives of the Ondo State Police Command in Akungba and Iwaro Akoko, Akoko South West Local Government Area, following an intelligence-led operation. The suspects, identified as Kayode Damilare, 30; Godwin Adejoro, 30; Adedapo Ogunro, 36; Chisom Okechukwu, 21; Imisi Ademulegun, 26; and Bukola Odugunle, 21, were apprehended during a meeting believed to be linked to unlawful confraternity activities. The arrest took place in the early hours of Tuesday by members of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad (SACS), who acted on credible intelligence received by the command.
The police spokesperson for Ondo State, Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the operation and stated that the suspects were actively involved in cult-related activities within the Akoko region. He emphasized that the intervention was part of ongoing efforts to curb the menace of cultism and ensure public safety in the state. The operation was swift and targeted, with officers moving in to disrupt the gathering before any violent incidents could occur.
During the search, police recovered several items linked to cult activities. These included five battle axes, one jackknife, various criminal charms, and confraternity paraphernalia such as boots, yellow singlets, and face caps. The seized items are now being held as exhibits and will be used in the ongoing investigation. Jimoh noted that the evidence will play a crucial role in building a strong case against the suspects.
The suspects are currently in police custody and are being questioned by investigative officers. According to Jimoh, the investigation is still active, and the individuals will be charged to court once all necessary procedures are completed. The police have also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to cultism or violent groups.
This arrest highlights the continued commitment of the Ondo State Police Command to combat cultism and maintain law and order. The operation comes amid growing concerns over the resurgence of cult-related violence in some parts of the state. Authorities are warning that any involvement in unlawful confraternities will not be tolerated and will attract the full weight of the law.
The case is expected to serve as a deterrent to others who may be involved in similar activities. As investigations continue, police are also conducting door-to-door sensitization in the affected communities to educate residents on the dangers of cultism. The government remains focused on creating a safer environment for all Nigerians, especially in regions prone to such criminal activities.
