The Plateau State Police Command has arrested 25 suspects in a major crackdown on drug trafficking in Jos, the state capital, following a coordinated raid on known drug hotspots on Saturday evening. The operation, which took place at approximately 7:55 p.m., targeted areas around Old Airport Junction and Fwavei Junction—locations frequently associated with the sale and distribution of illegal substances. Police confirmed the recovery of cannabis, controlled drugs, and other prohibited substances during the raid, marking a significant step in the state’s ongoing fight against drug-related crimes.
The operation was led by a joint security team under the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU), supported by officers from the Anglo-Jos Division, Anti-Cybercrime and Narcotic Unit, Monitoring Unit, and the Eagle Eye Patrol Team. These units worked together to ensure a swift and effective response to the growing menace of drug abuse and trafficking in the region. According to SP Alfred Alabo, the Police Public Relations Officer, the exercise was executed with precision and resulted in the successful apprehension of all 25 suspects involved.
SP Alabo emphasized that the recovered substances were seized directly from the suspects, indicating active involvement in drug distribution. He noted that the operation was part of broader efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating within the city. The Command has since launched investigations to determine the extent of each suspect’s involvement and to uncover potential connections to larger drug syndicates operating in Plateau State and beyond.
Commissioner of Police, CP Bassey Ewah, commended the officers for their dedication and professionalism during the operation. He praised their commitment to maintaining law and order, especially in high-risk areas where drug activities have been rampant. CP Ewah reiterated the police’s resolve to continue targeting drug hotspots and disrupting criminal operations that threaten public safety and social stability.
The arrest of 25 suspects and the seizure of illegal drugs underscore the increasing pressure on drug traffickers in Jos. Authorities believe this operation will serve as a deterrent to others involved in similar activities. With continued surveillance and joint task force operations, the Plateau State Police Command aims to reduce drug-related crimes and improve community safety across the state.
This crackdown is expected to strengthen public confidence in law enforcement’s ability to combat drug abuse, a persistent challenge in many urban centers across Nigeria. As investigations continue, more details about the suspects and their networks are likely to emerge, potentially leading to further arrests and prosecutions.
