APC Secures Victory in Kanos Dawakin Kudu/Warawa By-Election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won the Dawakin Kudu Federal Constituency by-election in Kano State, securing a decisive victory after the official declaration of results by Professor Umar Sani, Returning Officer and Professor at Bayero University, Kano. The election, held on June 20, 2026, saw Rabiu Shehu Aibu of the APC emerge as the winner with 35,356 votes, far outpacing his closest rival, Lawal Garba Haruna of the African People’s Movement (APM), who received 268 votes, and Abubakar Yahaya Muhammad of the Labour Party (LP), who garnered 98 votes.

Professor Sani announced the outcome at the collation centre, confirming that the by-election was contested by multiple political parties and conducted across all polling units within the constituency. He stated, “I hereby certify that I am the Returning Officer for the 2026 Dawakin Kudu Federal Constituency by-election held on 20th June 2026. The election was contested. The candidates received the following votes: Rabiu Shehu Aibu of APC scored 35,356 votes; Lawal Garba Haruna of APM scored 268 votes; and Abubakar Yahaya Muhammad of LP scored 98 votes.” His declaration concluded with the certification that Rabiu Shehu Aibu had met all legal requirements and was therefore declared the duly elected representative.

The overwhelming margin of victory underscores the APC’s strong presence in the region, as the party’s candidate dominated the electoral landscape with minimal resistance from opposition parties. Election officials reported that the process was conducted in an orderly manner, with no major disruptions or irregularities observed during voting, counting, or collation. The final results were certified at the constituency level in full compliance with the guidelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This by-election follows the earlier vacancy in the seat, which triggered the need for a fresh mandate from voters. The outcome reaffirms the APC’s electoral strength in Kano State, a key political battleground in northern Nigeria. The party’s consistent performance in local and national elections continues to solidify its position as a dominant force in Nigerian politics, particularly in the North-West region.

With the result now official, Rabiu Shehu Aibu is set to represent the Dawakin Kudu Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, bringing his mandate to serve constituents in the region. His victory is expected to influence future political dynamics in Kano and potentially shape party strategies ahead of upcoming elections. The peaceful conduct of the by-election also sets a positive precedent for future electoral exercises in the state.
