Army Generals Death Sparks Military Operation in Katsina

The Defence Headquarters Joint Task Force North West has launched a major military operation called ‘Operation Clean Sweep III’ across Matazu Local Government Area and surrounding communities in Katsina State, in response to the abduction and death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar. The offensive, which began on Saturday, June 14, 2026, targets bandits responsible for the general’s kidnap and subsequent death in captivity. The operation is part of the broader Operation Fansan Yamma, aimed at restoring peace and security in the North West region.

According to Lt-Col. Aliyu Danja, Media Information Officer of JTF North West, the military’s actions are driven by intelligence and aimed at dismantling the criminal networks operating in the area. Troops have conducted intensive fighting patrols, intelligence-led raids, cordon-and-search operations, and clearance exercises in known bandit hideouts. These coordinated efforts are designed to neutralize threats and prevent further attacks on civilians and security personnel.

Significant progress has been made in key locations such as Dikkawa Hills, Adua, Nasarawa, and Karaduwa, where several terrorist camps, logistics hubs, and support facilities have been destroyed. The destruction of these infrastructure points weakens the bandits’ ability to plan and execute attacks. The military has also intensified surveillance and intelligence gathering to ensure sustained pressure on remaining elements.

The operation follows a pattern of similar military actions in the region, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing insecurity in the North West. The abduction and killing of Major General Rabe Abubakar, a respected military figure, sparked widespread outrage and increased public demand for decisive action. His death underscored the dangers posed by armed banditry and the urgent need for a robust military response.

The JTF North West has assured the public that it remains fully committed to protecting lives and property. Civilians are urged to cooperate with security agencies and report suspicious activities. The military also emphasized that its operations are conducted with precision to minimize collateral damage and ensure civilian safety.

As Operation Clean Sweep III continues, authorities expect further disruptions to bandit operations across Katsina and neighboring areas. The success of this offensive could mark a turning point in the fight against insecurity in the region, restoring confidence among residents and signaling a stronger military presence.
