Kidnapping incident along Otukpo–Ogobia Road in Benue State has taken a partial turn for the better as some of the victims have been released, though two siblings remain in captivity after abductors demanded a N30 million ransom. The incident occurred when a family traveling from Abuja to Oklenyi in Okpokwu Local Government Area for the burial of their late mother had their vehicle break down along the highway. While stranded, armed men ambushed them, leading to their abduction.
The kidnappers have since freed the driver, handed over the corpse of the elderly woman, and released one of her three children. The body of the deceased woman has been taken to Okpoga, where funeral rites are currently underway. Family members confirmed the partial release through Idoma Voice, expressing both relief and deep concern over the fate of the two remaining siblings.
Despite the recovery of the mother’s remains, the family remains in distress as the abductors continue to hold two of the children. According to sources close to the family, the kidnappers have made contact and are demanding N30 million for the safe return of the captives. Relatives are now scrambling to raise the ransom amount while simultaneously appealing to security agencies to step up rescue operations.
The situation has left the family with mixed emotions—grateful for the return of the body and the release of one child, yet anxious and fearful for the safety of the two still held. The incident has also reignited concerns over insecurity along the Otukpo–Ogobia route, a stretch known for frequent attacks and abductions.
As of now, the Benue State Police Command has not issued any official statement or update on the ongoing situation. This silence has drawn criticism from local residents and family members, who are urging authorities to act swiftly to ensure the safe release of the remaining hostages. The incident underscores the persistent threat of kidnapping in parts of Benue State, particularly along major highways.
