Katsina State Police Command has arrested a suspected drug dealer and dismantled a four-man armed robbery syndicate operating in Funtua and surrounding communities, marking a significant crackdown on crime in the region. The operations, conducted in May 2024, resulted in the recovery of drugs, weapons, stolen property, and cash, according to police officials. The arrests were made following credible intelligence and targeted raids in key areas, showcasing the command’s commitment to restoring security and order.
Police spokesperson Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu confirmed the arrests in a statement released on Tuesday. He revealed that a 22-year-old suspect, Aliyu Umar, popularly known as “Makami,” was apprehended during a raid in the Jabiri area of Funtua Local Government Area on May 28. The arrest came after intelligence reports linked him to drug trafficking activities in the region. During the operation, officers recovered 38 Exol tablets, 28 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis, and a knife from the suspect’s possession.
Sadiq-Aliyu noted that Aliyu Umar is believed to be a key member of a drug peddling syndicate active in the area. He added that investigations are ongoing to uncover the full network and identify other individuals involved in the illegal drug trade. The police are also working to trace the source and distribution channels of the seized substances, aiming to dismantle the entire operation.
In a separate but related operation, operatives from the Makera Police Division arrested three suspected members of an armed robbery gang on May 21. The suspects—Salim Umar (24), Yusuf Mustapha (23), and Gaddafi Idris (27)—were apprehended following intelligence reports of their involvement in phone snatching, motorcycle theft, shop breaking, and other violent crimes. A thorough search of their hideout yielded several weapons, including knives, machetes, scissors, and an iron pinch bar.
Additional items recovered included mobile phones, SIM cards, charms, and cash. These items are being examined to establish links to other criminal activities and possible accomplices. The police command emphasized that investigations are still ongoing to determine the full scope of the gang’s operations and their connections to other criminal networks in the area.
The arrests highlight the growing efforts by security agencies to combat rising crime rates in northern Nigeria, particularly in areas like Funtua, which have seen increased incidents of armed robbery and drug abuse. The police’s use of intelligence-driven operations has proven effective in disrupting criminal activities and restoring public confidence.
With these arrests, authorities are sending a strong message that crime will not be tolerated. The Katsina State Police Command remains vigilant and committed to ensuring the safety and security of residents across the state.
