Edo Woman Arrested for Falsely Reporting School Kidnapping Alarm

Edo State Police Command has arrested Uzebor Emmanuel, popularly known as “Aza Woman,” for spreading false information on social media about the alleged abduction of students from Green Park Academy Aduwawa and Western Boys’ College Ikpoba Hill in Benin City. The suspect, who posted a viral video claiming that terrorists invaded the schools and kidnapped six students, has been taken into custody following investigations. The video, which falsely stated that some students escaped while others paid ransoms, caused widespread panic and heightened public anxiety across the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Command, SP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Sunday. He emphasized that the false claims generated fear among parents, students, and the general public, and could severely damage trust in the state’s security apparatus. The police described the actions of the suspect as a deliberate attempt to create chaos and undermine public confidence in law enforcement.

According to SP Ikoedem, the suspect will be charged to court once the investigation is complete. The command stressed the importance of responsible social media use and urged citizens to verify information before sharing. They warned that spreading unverified or false news can disturb public peace and lead to serious legal consequences.

The arrest comes at a time when misinformation on digital platforms has become a growing concern in Nigeria. With social media being a primary source of news for many Nigerians, the police are increasingly targeting individuals who exploit the medium to spread panic. The Edo State Command’s action serves as a reminder that false alarms, especially those involving school children and security threats, are not taken lightly by authorities.

The police also advised the public to rely on official sources for updates on security matters. They encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station instead of circulating unverified content online. This incident underscores the need for digital literacy and responsible online behavior, particularly during periods of heightened insecurity.

As investigations continue, the police remain committed to maintaining law and order in Edo State. The arrest of “Aza Woman” sends a clear message that those who endanger public safety through misinformation will face the full force of the law. The case also highlights the growing role of social media in shaping public perception and the urgent need for accountability in online spaces.
