A fresh wave of violence has rocked Plateau State as suspected Fulani militia attacked two communities within days, leaving 11 people dead and over 20 injured. On Monday, gunmen attacked Tukur village in Kinat, Mangu Local Government Area, killing Mr. Titus Brigade, his wife Mrs. Rahab Titus Brigade, and another woman, Mrs. Laitu Pius, while they were farming. Five others were injured in the unprovoked assault, according to Markus Lonkat, a youth leader in the community. The attackers, believed to be Fulani bandits, opened fire on the victims as they cultivated their land in the afternoon.
Lonkat expressed shock and sorrow over the incident, noting that the Fulani herdsmen have lived peacefully in Tukur for years. He condemned the violence and urged security agencies, particularly Operation Enduring Peace, to take decisive action to stop the recurring attacks. “We wonder why such barbaric acts are being committed by people who have coexisted with us for decades,” he said, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention.
In another deadly incident, eight people were killed and 15 injured in Gwomjang Community, Kadunu Ward, Gindiri District, on Sunday, May 31, 2026. The attack occurred around 7:30 pm when suspected Fulani gunmen stormed the community, firing sporadically before fleeing into the bush. Sunday Ezekiel, a youth leader in Gwomjang, confirmed the casualties, stating that four men and four women lost their lives. The injured are currently receiving medical attention at a nearby clinic.
Mangu Local Government Chairman, Emmanuel Bala Mwolpun, strongly condemned the attacks in a statement released on Tuesday. He described the violence as “barbaric and inhumane” and vowed that the perpetrators would face justice. Mwolpun commiserated with the families of the victims and urged residents to take responsibility for their own safety. He emphasized the importance of reporting suspicious movements to security agencies promptly to prevent further tragedies.
To support the victims, Mwolpun directed that the injured be transferred to the University of Jos Teaching Hospital (JUTH) for specialized medical care. He assured that the local government would cover all medical expenses for those affected. The series of attacks has heightened fears in the region, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced security measures and community vigilance. As the government continues to respond, residents are calling for sustained action to end the cycle of violence that has claimed too many lives in Plateau State.
