Ex-Okpebholo Aide Kelly Okungbowa Arrested for Allegedly Assaulting Police Officer

The Edo State Police Command has arrested Kelly Okungbowa, a former aide to Governor Monday Okpebholo and ex-Coordinator of the Public Safety Response Team (PSRT), for allegedly assaulting a police officer on duty in Benin City. The arrest took place on Sunday, May 31, 2026, following an incident on Saturday evening, May 30, 2026, along the Upper Sakponba axis in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area. ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrest and stated that Okungbowa is currently in police custody and will be charged in court. The police emphasized that no individual is above the law and urged the public to respect officers while they perform their lawful duties.

According to reports, the assault occurred during an encounter between Okungbowa and a police officer who was on duty. Police operatives swiftly apprehended him after the alleged attack. The incident has drawn attention due to Okungbowa’s past connections with the state government and his controversial history. Kola Edokpayi, President of the Talakawa’s Rights Group, condemned the alleged assault, calling it unacceptable. He praised the police officer for maintaining professionalism and restraint despite provocation, stressing that law enforcement officers deserve respect as public servants tasked with protecting lives and property.

Edokpayi also noted that any grievances against security personnel should be reported through proper channels rather than through confrontations. He pointed out that given Okungbowa’s influence and connections, it would have been more appropriate for him to report any perceived misconduct officially instead of engaging in a physical altercation with armed police. This latest incident adds to a series of controversies surrounding Okungbowa. He was previously sacked and suspended indefinitely on March 14, 2025, as PSRT Coordinator following widespread complaints of extortion, misconduct, and the tragic death of a two-year-old child during a vehicle seizure operation.

Okungbowa was also arrested by the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on March 17, 2025, over allegations of naira abuse. The arrest followed a viral video showing him spraying and mutilating naira notes at a bar in Benin City on March 9, 2025. He was later granted bail after being charged in court. Additionally, he was accused of assaulting female journalist Juliet Enabulele and cameraman Bright Osifo on December 15, 2025, during an empowerment event at Government House. The incident occurred at the Festival Hall during a programme for persons with disabilities organized by Mrs. Remi Tinubu, wife of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

This latest arrest underscores the ongoing scrutiny of individuals with political influence and highlights the commitment of law enforcement to uphold accountability. As Okungbowa faces legal consequences, the case continues to draw public interest and reinforces the message that no one is above the law.
