The Nigeria Police Force has arrested John Cosmos Govi, a chef accused of masterminding a sophisticated robbery at a residence in Abuja, involving criminal conspiracy, housebreaking, and the administration of harmful substances. The arrest was carried out by the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) following a meticulously planned operation on 23rd April 2026. The suspect, who had trained at a catering school in Cotonou, Benin Republic, reportedly gained access to the residence by securing employment as a chef after connecting with two accomplices named Peter and Moses, who remain at large.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Govi spent time studying the daily routines, movements, and security protocols of the household before executing the crime. He allegedly laced food served to the occupants and security personnel with a suspected sedative, designed to incapacitate them and create an opportunity for the robbery. Once the victims were subdued, Govi facilitated the entry of his accomplices into the residence, where they systematically vandalized the CCTV system, ransacked the apartment, and stole cash and twenty luxury wristwatches valued at approximately ₦150 million.
The police statement, signed by DCP Anthony Okon Placid, confirmed that the gang targeted high-value items, indicating a premeditated and organized crime. The suspects attempted to flee the scene through the Gwagwalada axis heading towards Lagos, but were intercepted by FID-IRT operatives. During the arrest, an iPhone 17 Pro Max belonging to the victim was recovered, along with a suspected chemical substance that has been sent for forensic analysis to confirm its nature and use.
This incident underscores the growing sophistication of criminal activities in Nigeria, particularly in urban centers like Abuja, where perpetrators exploit employment opportunities to infiltrate secure environments. The Nigeria Police Force emphasized its commitment to dismantling organized crime networks and ensuring that all individuals involved in such heinous acts face the full force of the law. Authorities are continuing to search for the two remaining suspects, Peter and Moses, who are believed to be in possession of the stolen valuables.
The case has raised concerns about security vulnerabilities in private residences, especially those with high-profile occupants. It also highlights the importance of vigilance and regular security audits for homes and businesses. As investigations proceed, the police are urging the public to report any suspicious activities and remain cautious about unauthorized personnel in residential areas. The arrest of John Cosmos Govi marks a significant step in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to combat organized crime and protect citizens’ property and safety.
