Livingston Release Ex-Flying Eagles Star After Relegation to Championship

Former Nigeria U20 international Samson Lawal has officially parted ways with Scottish club Livingston, following the club’s decision to release several players ahead of the summer transfer window. The 22-year-old midfielder, who joined Livingston in August 2023 on a three-year contract running until the end of the 2025–26 season, departs after struggling to secure consistent playing time. Livingston’s relegation from the Scottish Premiership after just one season in the top flight played a key role in the club’s restructuring, leading to Lawal’s exit.

Lawal’s journey to Scotland came shortly after his participation in the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup in Argentina, where he played in every match and contributed significantly to Nigeria’s run to the quarterfinals. His performances at the global stage earned him recognition and paved the way for his move to the Scottish club. However, despite his potential, he found it difficult to break into the first team, making only eleven starts across all competitions during his time with the Lions.

In an effort to gain more experience and playing time, Lawal was loaned to Inverness Caledonian Thistle in March 2024. During his stint with the Highland club, he made thirteen appearances, showcasing his versatility and work ethic. Although his time at Livingston was marked by limited opportunities, his performances during the loan spell highlighted his ability to adapt and contribute at a competitive level.

Before his move to Scotland, Lawal was a key member of the Flying Eagles team that won a bronze medal at the 2023 Africa U20 Cup of Nations. His experience in continental and international youth football has kept him in the spotlight for Nigerian football scouts and clubs seeking young talent with proven pedigree.

Lawal’s departure from Livingston marks the end of a chapter in his career, but also opens new doors for the young midfielder. With his youth international experience, loan spell in Scotland, and consistent performances at the U20 level, he remains a promising talent in Nigerian football. As he seeks a new club, the focus will be on finding a team where he can play regularly and continue his development. His journey is one that many young Nigerian players aspire to, and his next move could be pivotal in shaping his professional career.
