Birmingham City Retained List: Osayi Samuel Stays, Young Nigerian Pro Released

Birmingham City have officially confirmed their retained and released list for the 2025-2026 season, with Nigeria international Bright Osayi-Samuel among those kept on ahead of pre-season training. The Championship club, like all EFL teams, submitted their list by the third Saturday of May, as required by league regulations. Osayi-Samuel, who joined Birmingham City in July 2023 after his contract with Turkish side Fenerbahçe expired, has secured a place in the squad for the upcoming campaign. He signed a three-year deal with the Blues, which will keep him at St Andrew’s until the end of the 2027-2028 season.

In his first season with the club, Osayi-Samuel made 19 starts in the Championship, contributing to the team’s efforts throughout the campaign. His only goal involvement came in a February match against Norwich City, where he played a key role in the team’s offensive play. Despite limited goal returns, his consistent presence on the pitch and work rate earned him recognition from fans and coaching staff alike. His retention signals the club’s confidence in his ability to contribute more in the coming season.

On the other hand, 19-year-old winger Daniel Isichei is among 13 young professionals released by Birmingham City. Although he did not make a senior appearance for the first team, Isichei was named as an unused substitute on nine occasions during the season—seven in the Championship and once each in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. In pursuit of regular game time, he was loaned out to National League side Tamworth for the final two months of the season, where he gained valuable experience at a competitive level.

Isichei’s departure reflects the club’s ongoing assessment of youth talent and the need to provide opportunities to players who can immediately impact the first team. While his time at Birmingham City was brief, his inclusion in matchday squads and loan experience indicate potential for future development elsewhere. The club’s decision to release him suggests a focus on players with clearer pathways to the first team.

As Birmingham City prepare for the new season, the retained list highlights a blend of experienced players and emerging talent. Osayi-Samuel’s continued presence offers stability and international experience, while the release of young players like Isichei opens doors for new signings and internal promotions. The Blues will now shift focus to pre-season preparations, with the aim of improving their standing in the Championship. This decision-making process sets the foundation for a competitive campaign ahead.
