The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of an unspecified number of students and staff members from two schools in the Ahoro-Esinele community of Oriire Local Government Area, following a violent attack on Friday. The incident, which involved armed assailants on motorcycles, resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including a teacher and an okada rider who resisted the attackers. The police have launched an immediate investigation into the incident, with the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbenga, visiting the scene to oversee operations.
The attack targeted Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota and Community Grammar School/L.A Primary School in Esiele, both located in the same community. Preliminary investigations reveal that the assailants simultaneously struck both institutions, abducting pupils, students, and staff, including the school’s Vice Principal, Mrs. Alamu Folawe. The suspects also stole a Toyota Corolla vehicle belonging to the abducted vice principal and later set it ablaze along a road leading to the forest.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, the commissioner has directed a thorough probe to uncover the immediate and root causes of the incident. While no student has been confirmed dead, the attack claimed the life of Assistant Headmaster Mr. Adesiyan. Another victim was an okada rider who was shot dead after resisting the attackers’ attempt to seize his motorcycle. The police statement emphasized that the two schools—Community Grammar School and L.A Primary School—operate from the same premises in Esiele.
The incident has raised alarm over security in the region, particularly in educational institutions. Authorities are working to locate the abducted individuals and apprehend the perpetrators. The police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The Oyo State government has also been alerted to the situation, with security agencies coordinating efforts to prevent further attacks.
This abduction follows a pattern of increasing insecurity in parts of South-West Nigeria, where schools have become targets for criminal elements. The attack on Friday underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures in vulnerable communities. As investigations continue, families of the abducted students and staff await news on their safety. The incident has drawn widespread concern, prompting calls for stronger protection of schools and communities across the state.
