A tragic incident in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, has claimed the lives of a Nigerian Forestry and Security Service officer and a man he was pursuing, after both fell into an abandoned well during a chase. The event occurred on Friday, May 14, 2026, along the Delta State Polytechnic road near Mega Chis, and was confirmed by the Delta State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe. The police issued a statement to clarify false reports circulating that the victims were shot by officers, emphasizing that no firearms were used and no shooting took place.

According to the statement, a joint patrol team composed of police operatives and personnel from the Nigeria Forestry and Security Service was conducting routine duties when they spotted two men, later identified as Adama Augustine and another individual. Upon seeing the security team, the two men fled, prompting a chase led by the forestry officers. As the officers closed in, Adama Augustine jumped into an uncompleted building, and one of the forestry officers followed in pursuit. In the process, both men fell into an open, abandoned well located within the construction site and drowned.

Rescuers retrieved the bodies and rushed them to Ogwashi General Hospital, where medical staff confirmed their deaths. The remains are currently being held at the hospital morgue pending autopsy. The Delta State Police Command expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the family of the deceased officer, Mr. Eze Ifeanyi, and his colleagues in the Nigeria Forestry and Security Service. They also offered sympathy to the family of Adama Augustine, acknowledging the pain caused by this unfortunate accident.

The police stressed that the incident was purely accidental and not the result of any violent confrontation. An investigation has been launched to determine the full circumstances and to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The command urged residents of Ogwashi-Uku and Delta State to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information or rumors. They also called on the public to continue supporting security efforts by providing useful information that could enhance safety and prevent future occurrences.

This incident highlights the dangers faced by security personnel during routine operations and underscores the need for improved safety measures at construction sites and unsecured areas. As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to review protocols for joint patrols and public safety in high-risk zones. The event serves as a somber reminder of the risks inherent in law enforcement duties and the importance of community cooperation in maintaining peace and order.
