Lagos 2027: Labour Party Structures Remain Intact Amid Internal Crisis

The Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State has reaffirmed its operational strength and unity across all 20 local government areas as it ramps up preparations for the 2027 general elections. Despite ongoing internal leadership disputes, party officials insist that organisational structures remain intact and active, with sustained efforts in voter mobilisation and member registration. Mr. Sam Okpala, the Lagos State Secretary of the Labour Party, made these statements during an interview with journalists in Lagos on Tuesday.

Okpala highlighted that the party has strengthened its internal framework and is fully engaged in grassroots activities aimed at enhancing its electoral performance. He confirmed that voter sensitisation campaigns are already underway in various communities, with plans to expand outreach across the state. The party’s strategy focuses on increasing civic engagement and ensuring that citizens are well-informed about their democratic rights.

The Labour Party has also been actively registering members through the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) electronic platform, as mandated nationwide. According to Okpala, registration began shortly after the 2023 general elections and has continued without interruption. “We started preparation since 2023 and we are still here today and stronger,” he said, underscoring the party’s commitment to long-term political growth.

Describing the Labour Party as people-focused, Okpala stressed that its core mission is to mobilise citizens and promote active participation in elections. He urged residents not to be deterred by fears of violence, intimidation, or electoral malpractice. “Fear of violence, intimidation and electoral malpractice contribute to low voter turnout. We do not want people to be afraid and fail to perform their civic responsibility,” he emphasized.

On the leadership crisis within the party, Okpala acknowledged that internal disagreements have created challenges. However, he expressed confidence that the Supreme Court’s upcoming judgment will favour the Labour Party and lead to its full restoration. “We are hopeful that as the Supreme Court gives its judgment, it will be in our favour and we will reclaim the party,” he stated.

The Labour Party remains optimistic about its prospects in the 2027 elections, aiming to build on its current momentum and deepen its presence in Nigerian politics. With consistent voter engagement and a focus on democratic participation, the party is positioning itself as a credible alternative in the country’s evolving political landscape.
