Labour Party Leader Agbese Declares Party Biggest Opposition in Benue

Hon Philip Agbese, Labour Party (LP) State Leader in Benue and Federal Representative for Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo, has declared that the Labour Party is now the biggest opposition party in Benue State as the 2027 general elections draw nearer. Speaking to journalists and supporters at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Saturday, shortly after returning from Johannesburg, South Africa, Agbese expressed confidence in the party’s growing influence and outlined a clear vision for its future political strategy.

He stated boldly, “We are the biggest opposition party in Benue State today,” emphasizing that public sentiment has shifted in favour of the LP. Agbese added, “The people have shown us where their hearts are. I say boldly that 2027 is in the hands of God’s people.” His declaration comes amid a broader political realignment across Nigeria, which has strengthened the Labour Party’s position as the leading opposition force in the state.

Agbese announced the party’s adoption of a “quasi-civil, people-oriented” strategy for all upcoming elections. He stressed that the LP’s campaign will be issue-based, avoiding attacks on the government or public institutions. “Our campaign as a party will be issue-based,” he explained. “There will be zero attack on the government and public institutions. We will be direct and to the point on what our candidates have to offer the electorate – real solutions, not propaganda or empty promises.”

This approach, he said, combines civility in political engagement with a strong focus on the needs of the people. The strategy will involve extensive consultations, town hall meetings, and the development of practical policy programmes tailored to Benue’s unique challenges. Agbese highlighted his personal commitment to building on his achievements in the National Assembly, including legislative interventions and constituency projects that have positively impacted communities in Ado, Okpokwu, and Ogbadibo.

He outlined a vision for sustainable agriculture, improved infrastructure, quality healthcare, and youth empowerment programmes that create real opportunities. Agbese noted that his experience in the legislature has strengthened his resolve to advocate for policies that address core challenges faced by farmers and rural communities. He promised that LP candidates will prioritize continuity in positive initiatives while introducing innovative solutions to long-standing problems.

“The ‘quasi-civil’ nature of our politics means we will engage respectfully but firmly on issues of accountability and development,” Agbese emphasized. “Benue people deserve leaders who solve problems, not create more division.” He called on all well-meaning citizens, especially those who believe in good governance, to rally behind the Labour Party. He described 2027 as a defining moment for the state, urging residents to take ownership of their destiny through active participation in the political process.

As the 2027 elections approach, the Labour Party’s growing influence in Benue signals a significant shift in the state’s political landscape, with Agbese positioning the party as a credible alternative focused on development and accountability.
