Mustapha Sule Lamido, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate in Jigawa State during the 2023 general elections, has officially submitted his nomination form to contest for the same position again in 2027. The former candidate formally presented the form to members of the PDP State Working Committee and other key party stakeholders, seeking their endorsement and support ahead of the next electoral cycle. His decision to re-contest within the PDP puts an end to earlier speculation that he might defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Reports had indicated that Lamido had engaged in discussions with the APC, but these talks ultimately failed as no agreement was reached between the parties.
Lamido’s return to the PDP race reaffirms his commitment to the party’s ideals and his belief in its capacity to address the challenges facing Jigawa State and Nigeria. In his address to party members, he emphasized that he has completed all necessary consultations and is now formally seeking the party’s approval to stand as its flagbearer in the 2027 gubernatorial election. He stated, “We are PDP card-carrying members, and we believe in our party’s philosophy, strength, and resilience to tackle its internal challenges and also surmount the problems militating against Jigawa and Nigeria if given the chance again.”
He further expressed confidence in the PDP’s ability to deliver meaningful change, asserting that no other political party has brought projects and programmes that have significantly improved the lives of Nigerians like the PDP has. Lamido criticized the performance of other parties that came to power after the PDP, claiming they have failed to address critical social, economic, and security issues. Instead, he argued, their leadership has worsened the situation through poor governance and mismanagement.
The former candidate also called on all PDP members in Jigawa State to rally behind him, assuring them that he will continue to champion the party’s core values of patriotism and service to humanity. His re-entry into the race signals a renewed push for PDP dominance in the state and highlights the party’s ongoing efforts to retain political influence in the North. As the 2027 elections approach, Lamido’s campaign will likely focus on rebuilding trust and showcasing his vision for sustainable development in Jigawa. His decision to remain within the PDP underscores the party’s continued relevance in the state’s political landscape.
