A devastating rainstorm has claimed two lives and destroyed over 50 houses in Dokan Mai Jama’a community, located in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, leaving hundreds of residents displaced and in urgent need of assistance. The violent weather event, which struck suddenly on Monday evening, brought heavy rains accompanied by strong winds that uprooted roofs, collapsed walls, and caused widespread property damage. Village Head Alhaji Hamisu Tukur confirmed the tragedy, describing the storm as “violent and sudden,” and emphasized the loss of two lives and the destruction of more than 50 homes in the community.
The heavy downpour began around 6:41 p.m. and quickly escalated, catching many residents off guard. Eyewitnesses reported seeing homes reduced to rubble as roofs were torn off and walls crumbled under the force of the wind and rain. Families were forced to flee their homes in panic, with some scrambling to rescue belongings from the wreckage while others sought shelter with neighbours or relatives. The destruction extended beyond Dokan Mai Jama’a, affecting nearby areas within Chikun LGA and compounding the overall impact of the disaster.
Residents are now appealing to the Kaduna State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for immediate humanitarian support. Many families remain exposed to the elements with no shelter, and basic needs such as food, water, and medical supplies are urgently required. The community’s infrastructure, including roads and electricity, has also been severely affected, complicating rescue and relief efforts.
Alhaji Hamisu Tukur urged authorities to respond swiftly, stressing that the affected households are in dire need of emergency aid. He highlighted that the storm’s suddenness left little time for evacuation or preparation, making the situation even more critical. The community is now grappling with the aftermath, as displaced families struggle to find temporary accommodation and rebuild their lives.
The incident underscores the growing vulnerability of rural communities in Nigeria to extreme weather events, which are becoming more frequent and intense. With climate change increasingly affecting weather patterns, such disasters may become more common unless proactive measures are taken. The government and humanitarian agencies are now under pressure to provide timely assistance to prevent further suffering. As rescue and recovery efforts continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of those affected.
