The Tin-Can Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a massive shipment of illegal drugs valued at N18.96 billion, uncovering thousands of cannabis packages hidden inside imported vehicles at a Lagos port. The operation, conducted on Thursday under the supervision of Customs Area Controller Frank Onyeka, marked a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s fight against drug trafficking. The container, numbered HAMU 429961 and shipped from Canada, was falsely declared to contain only used vehicles. Acting on credible intelligence, customs officers carried out a full physical examination and discovered 185 jumbo bags of cannabis concealed within two vehicles.
The illicit substances were hidden inside a 2010 Toyota Camry and a 2023 Chevrolet, a tactic designed to evade detection. A detailed count revealed 9,450 packages of cannabis weighing 4,729 kilograms. Onyeka described the seizure as a significant operational success, attributing it to improved intelligence gathering, officer professionalism, and strengthened collaboration between security agencies. He emphasized that the operation was intelligence-led and executed in coordination with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
This major seizure comes shortly after the NCS and NDLEA signed a formal cooperation agreement on April 27, 2026, aimed at enhancing joint efforts against drug trafficking and other transnational crimes. The agreement includes commitments to improved intelligence sharing, joint operations, and the development of coordinated operational guidelines. To ensure seamless coordination, a standing inter-agency committee has been established, headquartered at the NDLEA offices in Abuja.
Onyeka confirmed that the seized drugs have been handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution, in line with its statutory mandate. He issued a strong warning to smugglers and criminal networks, stating that enforcement agencies remain vigilant and fully prepared to dismantle illicit trade routes. “There will be no safe haven for saboteurs,” he declared, underscoring the NCS’s resolve to combat smuggling.
The Customs Area Controller also expressed appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs for leadership support, as well as to the NDLEA and other partner agencies for their sustained cooperation. He acknowledged the media’s role in public enlightenment and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven enforcement and tighter port security. “The command remains resolute in deploying intelligence-driven strategies and robust enforcement measures to secure our ports and borders,” Onyeka added.
This operation highlights the growing effectiveness of Nigeria’s anti-drug efforts, particularly through inter-agency collaboration. As smuggling tactics evolve, so too do the strategies of law enforcement, ensuring that drug trafficking networks face increasing challenges. The seizure sends a clear message: Nigeria’s borders are under constant surveillance, and those who attempt to exploit them will be held accountable.
