Nigerian Army Recovers Remains of Soldier Couple Murdered During Traditional Wedding Journey

The Nigerian Army has successfully dismantled a major hideout linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Imo State, following a decisive military operation on 24 April 2026. Troops from the 82 Division carried out the mission along the Ubaha Orsu axis of Orsu Local Government Area, acting on credible intelligence to neutralize the terrorist camp. The operation was part of a broader strategic clearance effort aimed at dismantling IPOB/ESN infrastructure and locating the remains of two Nigerian Army personnel, Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew, who were abducted and murdered in May 2022 while en route to their traditional wedding.

Upon approaching the suspected hideout, the army troops encountered heavy resistance from armed militants. The soldiers engaged the terrorists in a fierce firefight, repelling multiple ambushes and forcing the criminals into disorganized retreat. The Nigerian Army described the encounter as a clear demonstration of the group’s desperation and criminal intent, emphasizing that IPOB/ESN continues to target both security personnel and innocent civilians without regard for human life.

After clearing the camp, troops conducted a thorough search of the area, leading to the discovery of shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain soldiers. The graves were carefully excavated, and the suspected remains were recovered for further investigation. The Nigerian Army confirmed that the remains have been secured and are undergoing forensic analysis, including DNA testing, to confirm their identities with scientific certainty.

Efforts are also underway to coordinate with the families of the fallen personnel to ensure proper identification and to arrange befitting burial ceremonies in honor of their sacrifice. The military stated that this operation highlights its unwavering commitment to delivering justice for fallen heroes and dismantling terrorist networks across the South East. The discovery of graves within the camp underscores the heinous nature of IPOB/ESN’s activities and their blatant disregard for human dignity.

The Nigerian Army reassured the public that operations against criminal elements will continue until lasting peace is restored in the region. It also urged citizens to remain vigilant and to provide timely, credible information to security agencies. The military’s actions in Imo State mark a significant step in the ongoing fight against terrorism and insurgency in the South East, reinforcing national security and the rule of law.
