Chief Kunle Ayorinde, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ibadan North East Local Government Area of Oyo State, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The move, announced during an interview with DAILY POST on Wednesday evening, marks a significant political shift in the region, especially given Ayorinde’s past contributions to the PDP’s electoral successes. Ayorinde, who hails from the Ita Baale area, cited lack of recognition and compensation for his efforts during the 2019 and 2023 elections as the main reason for his decision.
Ayorinde, a retired civil servant, revealed that he played a key role in ensuring Governor Seyi Makinde’s victory in the 2019 gubernatorial election. He emphasized that he and other party loyalists worked tirelessly to secure the PDP’s win, expecting fair rewards and acknowledgment from the government. However, he claimed that despite their efforts, they were systematically sidelined and denied access to the governor. “We worked for the victory of the party in 2023 with the hope that we should be compensated by Governor Seyi Makinde,” Ayorinde stated.
He further alleged that attempts to meet with the governor were blocked by individuals within the administration. “Unfortunately, instead of compensating us, the power that be blocked all access to see him (governor) and explain our views to him,” he said. Ayorinde stressed that politics is a form of work and should be duly compensated, just like any other profession. He acknowledged Governor Makinde’s leadership qualities but expressed concern that certain individuals are working behind the scenes to tarnish his reputation.
The defection comes at a critical time in Oyo State politics, as both major parties gear up for upcoming elections. Ayorinde’s move to the APC could influence other party members in Ibadan North East and potentially shift the political balance in the region. His experience and grassroots connections may strengthen the APC’s campaign efforts in the area. The development also highlights growing internal tensions within the PDP, particularly over issues of reward and inclusion among party stalwarts.
As Ayorinde integrates into the APC, his new party may benefit from his local influence and organizational skills. The political landscape in Oyo State continues to evolve, with this defection serving as a reminder of the dynamic nature of Nigerian politics. His decision could prompt further realignments and discussions on party loyalty, leadership accountability, and the treatment of political workers in the state.
